Designer Joanna Buchanan Thinks It's Time to Put a Twist on the Traditional Holiday Tablescape

The founder of the beloved eponymous brand shows VERANDA how to set an unforgettable table for the season.

NOV 11, 2022

Joanna Buchanan wants you to step outside the traditional green-and-red box this holiday season. The founder of the eponymous home accessories brand grew up watching her mother dig through their family's vintage collection of ornaments and decorations to spruce up their English countryside home for the holidays. Inspired by those quirky ornaments, Buchanan envisioned a more glamorous and a bit unconventional take on seasonal decor, designing a collection that hints at tradition but feels contemporary. She's now challenging people to take a more elevated and unexpected approach to their decorating, especially when it comes to your holiday tablescape. Luckily, Buchanan isn't sending anyone out on a decorating journey without guidance—she's revealed her need-to-know tips for setting her signature "traditional with a twist" holiday table. Below, discover why the decorating maven says you need two tablecloths, plus she reveals which creatures are invited to her dining table and dishes on all of her tablescape must-haves.

1 Layer Your Tablecloths

Buchanan encourages people to think about layering a solid tablecloth with a buzzy pattern to lie down a solid foundation for their holiday tablescape. Buchanan says, "It makes everything else a lot easier to build up because you started with a really interesting base." This dotted tablecloth playfully brings in the classic holiday green without all the kitsch.

2 Create Contrast with Your Placemats

Placemats are the secret weapon to take any tablescape from pretty to absolutely stunning. When working with a preppier tablecloth, Buchanan likes to layer over a patterned placemat in darker colors to create a layer of artful contrast. These cheetah print beauties are some of Buchanan's favorites as they feel luxe and unexpected for the holidays.

3 Reach for Richer Tones

Buchanan recommends leaning into a color palette that feels wintry without going overly traditional. For her, this means reaching for napkins in jubilant jewel tones that add richness to the overall table. Pro tip: Don't be afraid to incorporate a few different colored napkins as long as the tones complement each other.

4 Make Each Setting Unique

Beyond mixing different colored napkins, Buchanan often uses a different style napkin ring for each place setting. It makes each setting feel unique to the guest and adds a bit of fun to the table, especially when using quirky rings like this enamel beetle.

5 Go Big for the Centerpiece

Forgo the enormous floral arrangement this year—instead, make a statement with a cheeky centerpiece. These handmade capiz trees from Buchanan's brand hint at tradition in an elevated way.
